Manage your clearance costs against your budget. You did identify the budget in Step One, didn’t you?
Negotiate wherever possible. Rights clearance is much more like buying in a market than in a swanky department store. If you can’t afford something, then negotiate. But be realistic. There is no point in trying to get something for less than its worth.
